Well, what is with the “BIG WHOOPS” when I try to do anything on wordpress or google reader. Anyone else get that message? I try to comment and then get a message after several tries, of “whoops” and then it says “refresh” and then after several tries, it says “be back in a few”. Where did he/she go? Can’t they take my response and then go? Well, well, well, prehaps it is way too late to be on here anyway as my patience level is low. However, this time of the night seems to be best for me as all children are sleeping. Working on here tonight reminds me of the computerized phone messages when I call anywhere…..frustrated and only a computer to yell at
This is the very reason why teachers avoid the use of computer technology in the classroom. It is very frustrating when it doesn’t work for you and also the amount of time it consumes in a day. This is also why I like the self-directed learning approach to this course because when I do get frustrated, I can turn the darn thing off and go to bed as tomorrow is a new day.
Total Frustration

I was having trouble with WordPress yesterday, I think that the traffic on WordPress has grown a lot in the last month and maybe they cannot handle it as well. Today there seems to be no problems with it. It is very frustrating when things do not work out the way you want. We often waste precious time waiting for things to work out. You are right about self-directed learning, it allows us the freedom..day or night…to work on our blogs and wikis.
I hear you about the frustration. We pretty much have to put up with the frustration if we want to get our credit, however, teachers don’t have to put up with it, often they just walk away. For the average teacher to use these tools they really have to work right all the time. Most teachers don’t have the time for things that don’t work.
Sorry Kim! I haven’t had any of those errors with wordpress. We all understand your frustration all too well!! I too choose to walk away and try things again the next day. However, when doing a lesson and you encounter these types of things, not as easy to walk away!! That is why there is so much hesitation to start incorporating technology more into everyday teaching. Teachers are worried about the time component, and how they are going to still cover curriculum when what they had planned goes so terribly wrong all because technology doesn’t cooperate at the time!!
Sorry Kim to hear about your difficulties. The only problem I seem to be having is getting your page to load. The internet explore comes up saying it is unavailable. I finally go onto your page and was able to read your blog. You are doing a great job so keep up the good work.
The WordPress that we are using is free and is very popular so that means a great deal of traffic for their servers.
I know that many of the tools have to shut down once in awhile so that they can rework programs or make improvements or repair the work of evil hackers.
If you are using Bloglines you will occasionally get a picture of a shrugging plumber with a pipe wrench apoogizing for the delay whyile they fix the “plumbing”.
I can appreciate you frustration. There are only so many hours in a day, and after you work a full day, tend to the family, get the little ones off to bed, you hardly approach this course with lots of energy. It is a good thing we are all keen on this techie stuff! Keep on working! It is amazing how much we can learn off each other!
My experience with the various blog sites is that sometimes this happens. It’s enough to drive you computer madness. I’m in the habit of copying my blog post or my comment before I hit the button. That way I can paste it from the clipboard when I get reloaded. I always warn my students to save whenever they get to the point that they wouldn’t want to have to recreate what they’d done. I have a “horrible warning” story from a teacher I worked with who had spent over an hour working on exam when a student hit the power switch on the wall for the computers in the classroom. He had not saved and he lost all his work. I could hear the uproar down the hall. Yikes!
